Masturbation

The subject of masturbation has become more apparent within society through out the years.

It is now publicly broad casted through many different aspects of the media; from television programmes, films, music and books. Although masturbation is usually linked to that of comedy and not a sexual aspect.

Within television and film masturbation is usually associated with a character getting caught masturbating. Films such as 'American Pie' have made a masturbation scene famous, involving the main character 'Jim' and a certain apple pie! (ha ha).

However the idea of being caught masturbating creates and image that it is something that should be hidden, this however is not the case. Masturbation is completely natural although it should be kept private and not thrust into eyes of society. This is shown within the film 'American Pie' as 'Jim' gets caught masturbating by his father. It is a cringe worthy scene, this however is only because 'Jim' gets caught, not because he is doing something wrong. (Well accept not many people will wank off in a pie)

Masturbating is now also more commonly spoke about, including within groups of friends. This is also expressed by the media from the show 'Sex and the City' masturbation is a common topic within this show and the four female main characters leave nothing uncovered. In one episode sex toys are even given as a gift from one character to an other as an act of support and comfort. Within this show masturbation is shown as a very natural, sexual, independent female activity the woman within the show do not shy away from the topic they embrace it, creating a very fond appreciation towards it.
However within shows such as 'One Tree Hill' and 'Skins' masturbation is mentioned within groups of friends, however it is shown in a comical way. In ''One Tree Hill' the female character 'Brooke' gets caught masturbating and the rest of the characters playing her friends within the show, give masturbation a new name to 'Brooke' ones self. This is different with the show 'Skins' as 'Tony' catches his best friend 'Sid' masturbating to a photo of his girlfriend, the characters laugh it off and don't let it affect their friendship. Masturbation is shown differently in many programmes however it is always viewed with a very natural, light hearted attitude and nearly always with someone getting caught!
Here masturbation is spoken about by a GP, it explains what the act of masturbation is and how it is completely natural and normal. It's always interesting that in many magazines (Cosmopolitan) people write in asking questions whether it be for themselves or a question about their partner about masturbation and whether it is normal or not. An example being, is it normal to masturbate a certain amount of times during a day.
I believe that masturbation is normally considered to be a male dominated topic, however I do not think that woman masturbate less than men I just think that masturbating is publicised more where men are considered. This linking to the idea that women are pure and sweet, therefore they are not associated with acts of such strong sexuality.
